Alex: A Clockwork Orange

I learned a bit more about the movie and book while making this. I had liked the original sketch I'd done but could never make it work. This turned out to be a tough one actually, but I've learned I really need to up my painting levels. Despite the theatrical language and costume from the scene the image here shows Alex contemplative and sinister, but quick to rebuke his brother Dim 'for being a bastard with no manners.'

I think I just like the simplicity of the eyes, but couldn't replicate it faithfully to paint. It could never work on something with a focal point like that! What was I thinking..?

Sketchbook Element branding

For the past few months I've wanted to create a stronger identity for my website and my work. An exercise in branding was called for so I set to work. I wanted something that identifies with how I work, and wanted to keep the 'Sketchbook' feel to my logo. I tinkered away during my free time, sought advice from another designer whose opinion I trust and thought about I wanted the logo to reflect part of my personality. I don't consider a designers designer and I'm fine with that, but that doesn't mean I want any of my work to look shabby. I feel that if my latest piece of work is not an improvement in some fashion from my last, I've let myself down.

I've put up some of the images I worked on  while creating the logo. From my side, I'm happy with the end result.

I had the idea of combining the periodic table style box with sketchbook of pencil illustrations. Not anything too rigid. It wasn't doing it for me though.

A more hand-written style was an improvement, combining it with a 'rip'.

This was getting closer. I asked for a bit of advice at this stage. I like the hand-written style, but it wasn't edgy enough. Not quite.

The end result.

This is the end result. I thickened/tidied up the ink splashes. I also added in a little image from a photo of myself. I've used the dot in my site. I think it re-enforces that I'm a one man band, and that I feel sometimes isolated because of this.

The 2014 Calendar of Sawbridge-isms

My girlfriend has a tendency to mix up her phrases...a lot. As a gift, I created a desktop calendar for her. I took some of her best mix-ups and made little illustrations for them. Some photos of the final calendar and each of the illustrations beneath. For a closer look, clicking on any of the small images will bring them up to a larger size. I think most of them are like we're looking in on what she's saying. Like a confused fly on the wall...

The Bleeders

Another in my images influenced from my 'other work'...the warehouse. It's another movie style poster featuring a number of faces from work. Anyone else who works with me on my level will recognise the mountains of work that needs doing, while 'the leaders' discuss business over cups of coffee outside under the smoking shed. Fair play to them...This started as a pen sketch, then was worked up in Procreate. I've put the rough and final versions up.

Guy...

I've started Volume 2 of my movie stills images. First up is Guy from Galaxy Quest. I had a tough time deciding which of Sam Rockwell scenes to choose when I was doing this. It was a close tie between this and the final shot where we see him as a senior cast member and not just a 'glorified extra'. Love it!

Angel Tattoo drawing

I accidentally deleted this blog post. I only wanted to modify an image...Anyways, here it is again. I was asked to draw an angel for a tattoo. It's been a long time since I rendered anything in pencil like this, so I'm fairly happy. There were a few alterations made in photoshop. The face is based on the beautiful Grace Kelly.

1916 Easter Rising Leaders

The leaders of the 1916 Easter Rising. A small project I'd wanted to get finished for a long time. All the paintings were created on the ipad. I also want to make animated gifs for each of the paintings. I'll get to that soon enough. James Connolly is actually my great great grandfather, I would love to have the chance to have a long talk with him.

Prints of each of the images will be available soon. Watch this space and my Facebook page for details.

1916 Easter Rising / 7 Leaders: WiP

I'm working on a series of paintings of the leaders of the Easter Rising. All of them have been created on the ipad using Procreate and the Maglus Stylus. I'm keeping track of my own progress with this post. Here's the stages and completed version of one of the images I've finished. Once they're all done, I'm gonna stitch em' all together and create some gif images of them. One thing at a time though...
